Popularly known as “Hachimansama,” Himurehachimangu is located at the heart of Lake Country as a guardian of Omi. The fact that Hachimansama was enshrined in this location is said to be the origin of “Hachiman” as a place name and in turn the name “Omi Hachiman” after the establishment of the municipal system in 1954.

Established by Prince Shotoku, it is the thirty-first temple of the Saigoku (Western Japan) Kannon Pilgrimage. It is an ancient temple that offers a view of Lake Biwa in the distance if you climb its long stone staircase, leading essayist Masako Shirasu to say, “If asked where the most beautiful place is in Omi, I would answer that it is around Chomeiji” (“Omi Sanga" extract).
